Spelunking, Spellcrafting, and Re-Membering Yourself
There are many ways and many reasons to journal. I use mine for mining the depths of my soul, crafting the life I choose with words and pictures to boost my magic, and capturing my past in ways that honor and nurture my sensitive self. I teach this and the joys of creative play in a few different book courses, as well as in individual-page classes, in a variety of formats.
I am shifting to an "on request" model for classes. If you see something here that you want to learn, or dream up something you think I might teach, email me for information and availability. Click to email:

Briarwood Book of Light and Shadows series
Take a deeper dive into the depths of you and bring your magic to light!
Each month, explore a different topic and a different journal page style, like the Garden of Dreams class above, with a variety of mediums and techniques. It's a fabulous next-step for those who've created a Scrap Planner Visual Journal, but any larger journal or sketchbook will do and no experience is required. Part inward journey, part spiritual practice, and part grimoire, this class is for those who want to shape their most magical life and track their spells and synchronicities.
Registration for 2023 Spring session is now closed. Sign up for the newsletter to be notified when this comes available again, or drop me a note to let me know you're interested, and I'll make it a priority.

Scrap Planner Visual Journal Starter Class, online and in-person
Create a completely flexible journal you will actually use regularly. Learn journal techniques you can do with minimal materials or level up if you have a stash of supplies, already.
This is a fantastic book in which to plan projects and adventures, scrapbook your memories in a more flexible way than traditional albums, explore mixed media techniques, and dip a toe in the deeper waters of soul and spirit (or dive in and swim there, if you like).
In this live zoom or in-person class, I help you easily create a uniquely beautiful journal. You will start with an artist's sketchbook, then upgrade it with your custom created covers, end papers, and beautifully embellished fabric covered spine, and begin to fill it with elements of your choosing, including things like calendars, fold out pages, and pockets, all ready for your creative explorations in my classes and those you take from others.
Not a writer? No problem! Most of my students aren't. Also, NO ARTISTIC ABILITY REQUIRED! Sure, if you can already draw and paint, you will add those things to your pages, but the visual journaling techniques I teach use a whole lot of collage, a variety of easy to learn doodles, loads of ways to apply color and texture, and other "cheaty" ways to create images with personal meaning. You don't have to be an artist, but so many of my students discover they actually are!

Make a hard cover journal from scratch (Not currently scheduled, but will do if you ask me to.)
This is the perfect beginner class if you've never made a book before, but want to try it. I teach toward adults, but I've worked with kids as young as 4th grade in this class, which requires just basic glue and scissor skills. There's a bit of stitching, but I walk you through that. Whether you want a tidy book with crisp pages on which to plan and record your next adventure, or a funky, junky scrap journal in which to artfully arrange a collection of ephemera and imagery, the basic techniques are the same. A few simple tools, a few hours of fun, and this smaller journal will be ready to go wherever life takes you!

See a project you would love to try that isn't currently available as a course? Subscribe to my newsletter and be among the first to know when I put it on the calendar. Better yet, read it regularly for chances to request a class or vote for what I teach next! I promise the Briarwood Journal will always deliver some useful and entertaining compilation of goodies, like crafting tips, Briarwood clip art, little projects, journaling ideas, or a delectable recipe or two, along with Briarwood I*Magi*Porium news and special offers for subscribers. I try to email once a week but I think my average is closer to once a month and if there's a class coming up, I usually send a couple of emails in the two weeks before, all of which is meant to reassure you that you aren't going to get so much mail from The Briarwood that you toss it without reading it.
